Emissions measurement has its own clear rules. The most widely implemented is the measurement and reporting methodology according to the GHG Protocol.
In order to reduce greenhouse gas production, it is important to start measuring emissions so that their reduction can subsequently be addressed.

The vast majority of companies measure emissions using the GHG Protocol methodology

  • emissions are divided into 3 categories (Scope 1, 2 and 3)
  • it is the most widely used global standard for measuring, analysing and reporting carbon footprints in the private and public sectors
  • used by more than 95% of Fortune 500 companies
  • methodology used by CEZ, a.s.

GHG Protocol methodology emission categories

SCOPE 1 (direct emissions)

Activities that belong to and are controlled by the company, in which emissions are directly released into the atmosphere. These are direct emissions. They include, for example, emissions from boilers at the plant, vehicles owned by the plant or industrial process emissions.

SCOPE 2 (indirect emissions from energy)

Emissions associated with the consumption of purchased energy (electricity, heat, steam or cooling), which are not generated directly at the plant but are a consequence of the plant's activities. These are indirect emissions from sources not directly controlled by the plant.

SCOPE 3 (other indirect emissions)

Emissions that result from the plant's activities, which arise from sources outside the plant's control or ownership but are not classified as Scope 2 emissions. Examples include land-filling or material and fuel purchases, or business travel by means of transport not directly owned or controlled by the plant (e.g. air travel).

EU climate neutrality targets

he European Parliament has adopted ambitious EU climate neutrality targets for 2050 and made them legally binding.
New EU legislation raises the 2030 emissions reduction target to at least 55 % below 1990 levels.
